Virtualization's Phantom Menace: Security (Location: Lagoon J ) As enterprises rush to virtualize they need to be aware of some of the new security considerations and challenges related to both VMs and hosts. Now that VMs can exist in many formats and multiple states, the task of securing them gets much more complicated. Hypervisor technology represents a new operating systems in the datacenter, and one that is still relatively immature. Mothballed VMs may reintroduce viruses and worms that were previously considered eradicated in the enterprise. The easy access to free host software, combined with the growing number of virtual machines and the public availability of virtual appliances will challenge enterprises trying to protect and secure their environments. This session will focus on security challenges introduced by virtualization, and the future outlook for solutions and capabilities as well as offer some advice on how to deal with them.

Virtualization Beyond Consolidation: Driving Down OPEX, Not Just CAPEX (Location: Lagoon D) Although virtualization has existed for a few years now, users tend to fall into two camps: Those who have already implemented virtualization projects and those who hesitate because the value is unclear. The fact is that the benefits of virtualization represent a lot more than the simple consolidation of servers. Companies are seeing extraordinary operational expense benefits, such as simpler management, power and thermal control, high availability and disaster recovery. This session will look at virtualization best practices and the shortest path to deriving the greatest benefits from virtualization technologies, new operational practices and greater agility.

Paul Prince holds a bachelor of science degree in physics from Abilene Christian University, and a master of science degree in electrical engineering from the University of Utah.
Storage and Networking in a Virtual World (Location: Breakers K) Server and desktop virtualization return huge consolidation benefits in space, utilization, and power but how will this new architecture affect your network, storage and business continuance (BC) infrastructure? This session will explore networking, storage and business continuity (backup/recovery/disaster recovery) infrastructure issues and architectures that will complement your server and desktop virtualization efforts from the start.

Application Virtualization - What is it All About? (Location: South Seas C ) Organizations are increasingly tying their physical systems, networks, and applications to virtualized environments to achieve greater reliability, performance and flexibility in delivering services to business customers. This means tying the loosely coupled world of Service Oriented Architectures with virtualized environments such as VMWare, incorporating application virtualization, virtual desktop infrastructures and virtual lifecycle management. How companies approach this type of transition is critical to their success. Come listen to the approaches and requirements necessary to link Service Oriented Architectures to Virtualization to ultimately deliver application virtualization and more importantly how to manage this new environment. For example, how should organizations prepare? Why is it important to understand the dependencies within their line of business applications when migrating to a virtual environment? How can they manage the physical and virtual worlds as single environment? How can organizations verify that their systems conform to corporate and government oversight requirements in a way that meets their needs without becoming burdensome?
