Network Services: Which Ones and Where? (Location: Breakers F) There has been so much written in the last few years about the need to focus less on network technologies and more on network provided services. However, very little has been written about what services should be offered and where those services should reside. For example, should QoS be implemented in the router or in a stand-alone device? Should policy and control be exerted as part of the LAN infrastructure or by the firewall? In this session, leading vendors will describe their vision of which services belong where and why.

Gotchas When Choosing and Implementing MPLS Services (Location: Breakers F) MPLS promises benefits including lower cost, any-to-any connectivity, and inherent quality of service capabilities. However, IT organizations looking to implement MPLS have numerous issues to evaluate. This session will detail the issues including: the use of a Layer 2 vs. a Layer 3 solution, the number of service classes offered by the service provider, whether or not to use a managed service offering, which advanced services (i.e., Internet access) make sense, the various ways that service providers charge for a class of service profile and exactly how helpful is the provider's web portal functionality.

Implementing Policy and Control (Location: Breakers F) There is general agreement that IT organizations need to implement control functions in the IT infrastructure in order to both improve application performance and to provide enhanced security. There is also general agreement that IT organizations require the capability to set policy in an automated fashion. This session will explore those issues and position the attendees to create their company's policy and control strategy.

Evaluating New WAN Services (Location: Breakers F) In order to take advantage of lowering costs and new functionality, enterprise IT organizations need to migrate away from Frame Relay and ATM and to adopt new WAN services. Many enterprises have already begun to use MPLS services running at Layer 3. They now have the option of adopting MPLS services running at Layer 2 or of using Virtual Private LAN Services (VPLS). They also have the ability to use a new generation of managed services, some of which claim to make the Internet perform as well as a private WAN. The speakers on this panel will identify the pros and cons of the emerging WAN services so that you can choose the services that make the most sense in your environment.
